Cole Palmer dazzles, Alejandro Garnacho impact, four 4/10s - Chelsea player ratings vs Brentford

Send Push

Chelsea were denied a big three points with a Fabio Carvalho equaliser right at the death ensuring the points where shared with Brentford.

The Bees took the lead in the first-half at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Kevin Schade latching onto the end of a fine Jordan Henderson pass and then punishing the visitors with a clean finish into the bottom corner. Chelsea needed to improve in the second period and Enzo Maresca turned to his bench.

Palmer was one of those who came on and Chelsea's No.10 made an immediate impact. The 23-year-old, who missed wins against West Ham United and Fulham because of a groin injury, coolly finished on the half volley after Joao Pedro knocked it down.

Alejandro Garnacho was the last of Chelsea's five substitutes and the Argentine, like Palmer, made an immediate impact. His cross was not dealt with at all by Brentford and the ball eventually fell to Moises Caicedo, who struck from the edge of the past to leave Caoimhin Kelleher with absolutely no chance.

However, there was time for one more twist. Chelsea could not deal with a long throw into their box and Carvalho was at the back post to level the match.

Below, Bobby Vincent provides you the full Chelsea player ratings from the Saturday evening match:

Robert Sanchez - 6

Sweeps up well to prevent a Brentford chance around half an hour into the game. Couldn't do much about either goal.

Wesley Fofana - 4

First start since March, and it came at right-back. Sloppy in possession at times. Didn't have much come down his side and looked to get forward but a few wayward passes. No surprise to see him come off at the break.

Trevoh Chalobah - 6

Plays a world-class pass over the top to Pedro Neto on around 18 minutes that could have easily turned into an assist. Apart from that, he defended exceptionally well. Always on the front foot and really aggressive in his play. A superb start to the season for the Cobham graduate.

Tosin Adarabioyo - 4

Fine block early on to deny Schade. He couldn't deny him for the goal, however, with Tosin being done by a fine ball from Henderson. Bar that one block, he looked uncharacteristically shaky in defence. An off day.

Jorrel Hato - 4

First start in the Premier League for the Dutchman. Asked to play the Marc Cucurella role - which we all know is very taxing - and he struggled. Sloppy in possession on the odd occasion. Off at half-time.

Moises Caicedo - 9

Not the ideal preparation for Caicedo coming into this one, but that didn't matter for the Ecuadorian. Plenty of tackles and interceptions. We know he can do that - he does it every week. What he does not do every week is what we saw on 85 minutes. World-class.

Enzo Fernandez - 6

Seemed to play a bit deeper than usual and we didn't see him inside of the box too much. Passed it well without ever finding a way behind Brentford. Improved a lot in the second-half, where he linked up with Neto well.

Pedro Neto - 7

Back on the right-hand side. A livewire as always. Caused Keane Lewis-Potter problems all evening-long. Puts one on a plate for Palmer on 75 minutes but his teammate cannot get him the assist.

Facundo Buonanotte - 6

I'm not sure anyone expected him to start. But start he did - and he slotted in nicely. Very calm and composed in possession with his new teammates wanting to give him the ball at every opportunity. Thought it was a tad harsh to bring him off at the break.

Jamie Gittens - 4

His first start since the opening weekend of the season. Gittens tried but he ultimately failed to make an impact. Difficult to see what he was offering the Blues. Comes off early in the second-half.

Joao Pedro - 6

The ball didn't stick to him like it usually does. He cut a frustrated figure on the pitch. Ended up with a crucial assist, though, for Palmer.

Reece James (on for Fofana 46') - 6

Slots into midfield. Passes it well. Always shouting for the ball.

Marc Cucurella (on for Hato 46') - 6

Added an attacking threat that we didn't see from Hato.

Tyrique George (on for Buonanotte 46') - 6

An immediate impact from the 19-year-old. Being used in the No.9 role, he made a good run and his well-hit strike was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher. Moved out to the left wing when Palmer comes on. Bright.

Cole Palmer (on for Gittens 56') - 8

An immediate impact. It is so good to see him back. It is so good to see him shiver in front of the Chelsea fans again. First open play goal in the league since January - and a very timely one at that. Completely changed the game.

Alejandro Garnacho (on for Joao Pedro 79') - 7

"Viva Garnacho" was the chant from the away end as he came on and the Argentine made the travelling support even happier when he played a big part in Caicedo's goal. His dangerous cross was not dealt with by Brentford and the ball ended up at the feet of Caicedo, who did the rest.
