The salary of ward members has been increased in Bihar; earlier it was Rs 1,600. Their job is to raise the problems of the ward, monitor development works and strengthen local governance.
The role of ward members in Bihar is very important. They are the closest link between the public and the government at the local level. Be it a city or a village, every ward has its own representative, whom we call ward member or ward councilor. Their work is not limited to meetings only, but it is also their responsibility to raise every small and big issue of the ward and get it resolved.
How much salary do they get?
Recently the Bihar government has increased the honorarium of ward members. Earlier they used to get Rs 1,600 per month, but now it has been increased to Rs 2,400. That is, ward members will get Rs 800 more every month.
What is the work of a ward member?
The real responsibility of the ward member is to become the voice of the people of his area. If the road in a ward is broken, the drain is clogged, the street light is not working or there is a shortage of water, then it is the ward member who brings these problems to the notice of the Nagar Palika, Nagar Nigam or Panchayat.
Whenever there is any construction work of road, drain, park or any other kind in the ward, the ward member monitors it so that the work is completed with the right quality and on time. It is their daily work to listen to the complaints of the common citizens and take them to the concerned department. It is also their responsibility to call ward meetings from time to time and inform the public about the ongoing work. If someone breaks the rules in the ward, such as illegal construction, not paying taxes or ignoring cleanliness, then the ward member takes the initiative to take action against him. To convey the information of the schemes of the Central and State Government to the people and to ensure that the benefits reach the eligible people.
Why is their role important?
Whatever problem you face in your area, the first stop for it is the ward member. They not only bring forward the problems but also remain active in the process of resolving them. The transparency and strength of local governance largely depends on the activeness of ward members.
