For most people, a divorce represents the death knell to their relationship. However, superstar Aamir Khan believes otherwise. In a candid interview with Filmfare, the ‘3 Idiots’ actor revealed how, despite both of his marriages ending in a divorce, his equation with both of his former wives—Kiran Rao and Reena Dutta—transitioned smoothly from romantic to a friendship.
Aamir revealed that both of his divorces occurred without any bitterness or mudslinging. In both cases, they didn’t even hire separate lawyers.
“Just one lawyer, one conversation. That was it. These weren’t battles, just two people parting as partners, not adversaries. Reena and I were married for 16 years; we grew up together. I was 21, and she was 19. Kiran and I also shared a deep, meaningful connection. But for a respectful, loving bond to continue after a marriage ends, both people have to want it,” he explained.
He also reminisced about how, over time, both of his former wives became reliable friends. He revealed that if today he experiences a setback, they would be there for him, and he would also go out of his way to show solidarity if they needed it. He also recalled how Reena approached him when she was undergoing a personal crisis. He revealed he had convinced her father to get treatment for cancer.
“When Reena’s father was unwell and refused treatment, she called me. I convinced him to get help for his cancer. You can’t fake that kind of trust. At Ira’s wedding, seeing us all together, I realised how rare this is…” he stated.
Aamir Khan’s personal life has seen its share of transitions over the years. He first tied the knot with Reena Dutta in the year 1996. Together, they built a family and became proud parents to two children — their son, Junaid, and daughter, Ira Khan. Their marriage, which spanned over a decade and a half, came to an end in 2002 after 16 years of companionship.
Years later, Aamir found love again and entered into a second marriage with filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. This union lasted for close to 17 years. From this relationship, they welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan. Even though the couple eventually chose to separate, they continue to share parenting responsibilities with mutual respect and affection. Aamir has consistently highlighted that, in spite of the divorces, the emotional connection and sense of unity within his family have not diminished. His bond with both Reena and Kiran remains amicable, rooted in shared history and commitment to their children.
