Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has placed the state on high alert for the next 72 hours as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of “heavy to very heavy rain or thundershowers with at times very intense spells” in Hyderabad and several other districts.
The forecast also flags the possibility of flash floods in some areas.
According to NDTV, the Chief Minister has instructed all government departments to remain on round-the-clock vigil to safeguard public safety and limit the impact of the predicted downpour.
As a precaution, the state’s education department has announced half-day schedules for schools within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits on Wednesday and Thursday, while Friday will be a public holiday for Independence Day.
Reddy has also appealed to IT companies to permit employees to work from home over the next three days “to reduce traffic congestion and ensure the safety of commuters.”
The Hyderabad Rain and Flood Alert Authority (HYDRAA) has advised residents to avoid non-essential travel during the peak of the rains.
Reservoirs on watch, residents urged to move to safer ground
Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has instructed irrigation officials to maintain high alert status and “continuously monitor reservoirs and ponds to prevent any overflow,” NDTV reported.
Staff have been told to inspect dam gates, spillways, embankments, and canals, and to coordinate with the Disaster Management Department for timely alerts to low-lying areas.
Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid waterlogged zones, and refrain from attempting to cross flooded roads or underpasses.
Those living in vulnerable localities have been advised to relocate to safer places as a precaution. Toll-free numbers are operational for the public to report rain-related incidents.
IMD issues orange alert, warns of ‘very intense spells’
The IMD, in its latest forecast, placed Hyderabad under an orange alert from August 13 to 16, cautioning that northern and western parts of the city — including Medchal district and Cyberabad — are expected to be the worst hit. In a post on X, the department said:
“Telangana: Very heavy to extremely heavy rain likely in isolated areas from 13th to 16th August. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam & Rayalaseema: Isolated heavy to very heavy rain expected on 13th & 14th August.”
Its safety advisory calls on citizens to “postpone non-essential travel,” “avoid sheltering under trees or billboards,” and “stay away from makeshift camps near rivers or slopes.”
Officials have stressed that residents should track updates only through IMD’s official channels and advisories issued by HYDRAA and local authorities.
