A 26-year-old woman was sexually harassed and assaulted by a group of men in Jigani, near Bannerghatta on the outskirts of Bengaluru, on Sunday evening. The incident has sparked public outrage after videos of the attack began circulating online.

What Happened?

As per a TOI report, the woman, a mother of two and a beautician, was walking to a nearby shop between 4 pm and 5 pm in Prabhakar Reddy Layout near Mylasandra when she was harassed. One of the men in the group, identified as John Richard, 24, allegedly made lewd comments, blocked her path, and touched her inappropriately. He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Though some of the men with him tried to stop the incident at first, they later allowed it to continue. The woman tried to fight back but was beaten. A man on a two-wheeler eventually helped her escape and took her home.

Attack Continued at Her House

Even after she reached home, the harassment didn’t stop. John and his friends followed her, jumped over her compound wall and gate, and threatened her again. “They waylaid me, harassed and assaulted me under the influence of alcohol and ganja. When the public intervened, they attacked them too. I ran inside the house, but they followed,” the woman told the media.

Soon after, John’s parents also came to her house and accused her and a male friend, a gym trainer, of attacking their son. Eyewitnesses, however, told them to leave after informing them that the attack had been caught on CCTV.

Police Response and Investigation

The police have detained John Richard and his father, Kanikya Swamy, a businessman. A case has been filed under sections related to sexual harassment, assault, criminal intimidation, and wrongful restraint. C K Baba, Bengaluru District Superintendent of Police, confirmed that efforts are on to arrest the remaining accused.

While the woman claimed police did not register an FIR on Sunday despite her complaint, officers said both parties had come to the station and agreed to return the next day. On Monday, she approached the police again after allegedly receiving fresh threats from John’s parents.

Counter Complaint Filed

John’s mother, Mary Pushpa, has now filed a counter-complaint. She claims her son was beaten by the gym trainer during the scuffle. Police say both complaints are being looked into.

The investigation is ongoing.
