Soon Mawsynram in Meghalaya will become home to the world’s first rain museum . Mawsynram, also the wettest place on Earth, receives an average of nearly 12,000 mm of rainfall annually. Situated in the beautiful East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, Mawsynram is a unique hill village offering exclusive travel experiences.
Why Mawsynram?
Mawsynram globally holds the title for ‘ Earth’s Wettest Place ’. People here have adapted to a different kind of way of life as for them rain is like their family. Locals use bamboo-and-palm “knups” as umbrellas. They have soundproof thatched houses as it’s always raining in the region. They also construct living root bridges that last generations which is a rain-friendly bridge.
This is the prime reason why the Government of Meghalaya chose Mawsynram as the site for a rain-themed cultural and science museum.
More about the Rain Museum
It’s an INR 35 crore investment. When done, the museum will offer:
Interactive weather exhibits where people can learn about clouds and physics related to it. They can also learn about climate change.
Live rain simulation zones: Feel the power of Mawsynram’s monsoon indoors.
Khasi cultural installations: Discover how rain has shaped local traditions.
Meteorological research center: Featuring advanced monitoring tools, rain gauges, and possible collaborations with IMD and ISRO.
Visitors can also expect an immersive blend of nature, science, and culture.
A boost in tourism
The Rain Museum project is part of a broader eco-tourism project. It includes:
New roads and more homestays
An eco-resort near Mawmluh, marking the “Meghalayan Age”
Training and employment for local communities
With this, the officials hope to attract more visitors from all over the world. This would also offer sustainable economic growth for the region’s residents.
