The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has raised “several pressing questions” regarding the gang rape of a female law student inside the campus of a reputed law college in Kolkata’s Kasba neighbourhood. The incident, which allegedly occurred on the night of June 25, has triggered widespread shock and outrage across the state.
Three accused have been arrested in the last 24 hours two former students- including a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) office bearer and one current staff member. The accused have been identified as Manojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20).
In a post on X, the BJP’s West Bengal unit said, “At a reputed law college in South Kolkata, a female student was raped by Manojit, a former student and active member of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), along with two others, after being called near the TMCP union room.”
The West Bengal unit of the BJP raised a series of questions on micro-blogging website X in the wake of the incident. The first was: “Why was the student asked to come near the TMCP union area?”
It further asked: “How did a former student and political affiliate gain such easy access to the campus?"
“Under what authority did he approach and summon a current student?”“Was there no college staff or security present at the time?”
“Did no one hear or witness anything?”
Citing details from the preliminary investigation, the BJP claimed that the victim was first taken to a bathroom and then moved to a room after she raised an alarm.
Expressing concern and demanding a thorough investigation, the party said, “If these claims are accurate, it is deeply concerning that such an act occurred within a college campus, seemingly unnoticed. It is important that the police conduct a thorough investigation and provide clarity on these allegations.”
The BJP concluded its post by extending support to the victim and her family. The post also had pictures of one of the accused Manojit Mishra with TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, TMC Councillor and Mamata Banerjee’s sister-in-law Kajari Banerjee and State Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
