It has been just under a year since Lando Norris' tyre indecision at the rainy 2024 British Grand Prix was questioned by Lewis Hamilton. Last summer, Hamilton stunned the F1 world by clinching his ninth victory at Silverstone, marking his first GP win since the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP.
The wet and wild weekend was dominated by the narrative of the seven-time F1 champion's triumph, but Norris' choice of tyres was also brought into focus. In the final stages of the race, Hamilton and Norris were on soft tyres, but the latter had the opportunity to trade his in for medium ones. Hamilton, who was still at Mercedes at the time, managed to hold onto his lead, but Max Verstappen, who was now on hard tyres, chased down Norris and pipped him to second place. Norris admitted his error, but his mistake was further confounded when Hamilton told him, to his face, that he was wrong.
In the cooldown room, Hamilton asked "[Were] you on soft as well?" Upon Norris' confirmation, Hamilton replied: "But you had two new mediums," before adding: "Yeah, you could have gone to the medium. A new medium would have been faster probably."
During the race's final leg, with the track drying out, Verstappen's tyre advantage kicked in and his speed and acceleration was no match for Norris. Hamilton had enough to get over the line, but the Bristolian had to settle with third place.
After the race, Norris said: "That crucial decision at the end he just did a better job. Hats off to him and Mercedes so they deserve it. It was tough. It was enjoyable, it was fun battling these guys.
"These tricky conditions are always on a knife edge and you're risking a lot. So many things good, but a few too many let-downs today and as a team I don't think we quite did the job we should have done, or good enough, but still lovely to be on the podium here at Silverstone.
"I'm not making the right decisions. I blame myself today for not making some of the right decisions. I hate it, I hate ending in this position and ever having excuses for not doing a good enough job. We'll come back stronger here next year and try again."

Norris will get his chance to make amends for this setback at Silverstone. He is expected to be among the front-runners at the British GP.
Norris is currently battling for the championship with McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri, who is leading by 15 points. With Verstappen lagging behind the Brit by 46 points, this year's contest seems to be between the two McLaren contenders.
However, a self-assured Hamilton has set his sights on his favourite Grand Prix as a chance to secure not just his first podium position with Ferrari on a Sunday race but to clinch the victory too. At the Austrian GP, he achieved fourth place, matching his best finish with the famed racing team.
Ahead of the GP at Silverstone, Hamilton expressed optimism to the media, saying: "I'm just hoping for a strong weekend. I've not had a podium yet, this would be a really special place in order to have that so I'm really counting on the amazing support we have here to hopefully make the difference."
