Not surprisingly, the internet is rich with kettle cleaning tips to remove limescale buildup. The most popular involves filling the kettle with equal parts water and white vinegar, bringing it to a boil, then letting it sit for about half an hour before rinsing.
While white vinegar is fantastic at cleaning several things around the home, it's not everyone's cup of tea-especially because boiling a strong vinegar solution leaves a lingering vinegar smell in the air, often for hours. Sometimes it can be so potent that you get a phantom vinegar taste in your mouth. Taking to her cleaning TikTok page @cleanwithgeorgiia, Georgia has shared a natural item to remove kettle limescale that is equally safe, but won't leave your house smelling like a pickle factory - citric acid.
She captioned the video: "Easiest way to remove kettle limescale. You don't need to buy a new kettle, you just need citric acid."
Citric acid is derived from citrus fruits, and while it has some antibacterial properties, its real benefit is as a descaler.
For this method, Georgia instructed that you fill your kettle up halfway and boil before adding in two tablespoons of citric acid.
Leave the natural cleaning solution to sit for 15 minutes before emptying the kettle and giving it a rinse.
Once the time was up, the limescale buildup on Georgia's kettle had completely vanished.
If the buildup is really bad in your kettle, you may need to let it soak a little longer or repeat this process. You can also let it soak overnight.
With this method, you shouldn't have to use a cloth or brush inside the kettle at all, which is good because doing so could damage sensors or other electronic elements.
If you notice any limescale buildup on the outside of the kettle, you can dip a soft cloth in the solution that's already in the kettle.
Then use the cloth to soak and wipe away limescale buildup on the exterior of the kettle.
