In what's being seen by many as a pointed counter to King Charles' symbolic show of unity with Canada, Donald Trump took to on Tuesday to reignite his campaign for North America's unification-under the American flag.
"I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!" Trump posted.
The statement was delivered a matter of hours after King Charles' opening the Canadian Parliament, in a moment seen as a strong gesture of support for the nation's independence amid growing U.S. pressure.
The King and Queen's visit was brief but deeply symbolic, and featured a grand ceremonial procession and a speech that blended diplomatic precision with heartfelt sentiment.
While much of the King's 30-minute address was drafted by the Canadian government, Charles opened and closed the speech with his own words, delivering an emotional message about Canada's national identity and global standing.
"It is with a sense of deep pride and pleasure that my wife and I join you here today, as we witness Canadians coming together in a renewed sense of national pride, unity, and hope," he said.
"As I have said before, 'Every time I come to Canada... a little more of Canada seeps into my bloodstream - and from there straight to my heart.' I have always had the greatest admiration for Canada's unique identity."
In what many interpreted as a subtle message aimed at protecting Canada's sovereignty, the King continued: "Today, Canada faces another critical moment. Democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, self-determination, and freedom are values which Canadians hold dear, and ones which the Government is determined to protect."
Reading the government's official words, Charles underscored the country's resolve: "The Government will discharge its duty to protect Canadians and their sovereign rights, from wherever challenges may come at home or abroad."
The King then signed off his remarks in distinctly Canadian fashion, quoting the nation's anthem: "The True North is indeed strong and free!"
The spectacle of the royal arrival was equally impressive. Crowds lined the streets as 28 majestic horses led the royal procession through Ottawa. The King and Queen travelled in the historic 130-year-old State landau, drawing cheers and cries of "we love you King Charles" from flag-waving well-wishers.
Upon arrival at the Senate building, they were welcomed by Prime Minister Mark Carney and his wife Diana. The King's visit marked his 20th official trip to Canada, and the message this time was unmistakable: steadfast support in the face of growing geopolitical pressure.
But will Charles' careful diplomacy be enough to keep the peace with Washington?
Commentators are already speculating on whether the King's pointed language will ruffle feathers in Trump's camp-especially after Charles extended a rare and personal invitation to Trump for a historic second state visit to the UK.
However, a royal source : "He is thoughtful, has mastery of that diplomatic tight rope and has become even more acutely aware of how to walk it since he acceded to the throne."
The source added: "People will understand the King's distinct, constitutional roles as Head of State for Canada and Head of State for the UK - and if anyone can fulfil those two separate roles adroitly, without favouring one over another, it's him."
As tensions over tariffs and sovereignty continue to simmer between Ottawa and Washington, palace aides say Charles is ready to "rise above" any "regional challenges" that come his way.
For now, Canadians are left weighing a dramatic American overture against the reassuring presence of their King-who ended his speech with "heartfelt gratitude" for their welcome and a firm reminder of Canada's strength, unity, and freedom.
