Use common cleaning ingredient to stop spiders entering the home this mating season

A simple solution made with a common cleaning ingredient could deter some unwanted visitors to your home. Spraying your surfaces with this mixture could stop spiders entering the house.

As the weather gets a little chillier in autumn you may start to notice more spiders inside. September marks the start of mating season and you'll see more male spiders out and about looking for females. Luckily, if you're not a big fan of spiders there are steps you can take to keep them away.

According to Country Living, this includes using a number of different fragrances around the home. It said: "The majority of spiders are harmless to humans, but most people still don't like sharing their home with any eight-legged friends.

"You're likely to spot these creepy crawlies indoors during autumn and winter, when shorter, darker days and colder temperatures see their annual migration from our gardens to our houses, but it's not unusual at any time of year. During late summer and autumn months, especially during September and October, there may be increased spider activity as the male spiders begin their search for a mate.

"Fortunately, there are plenty of natural spider deterrents that will deter arachnids from setting up in your place without causing them any harm." Among the suggestions for keeping spiders away was white vinegar.

"This cleaning staple has multiple uses including deodorising clothes, removing stains and even removing weeds from the garden. Country Living said: "While not as fragrant as the above solutions, vinegar can also assist in warding off spiders."

To do so, it recommended mixing water and white vinegar into a spray bottle. "Fill a spray bottle with half white vinegar and half water and spray in corners, cracks and crevices," it added.

"Be careful to avoid varnished surfaces as it can cause damage." Other fragrances that can deter spiders include:

• Cinnamon
• Peppermint oil
• Citrus
• Cedar
• Garlic

To prevent spiders coming into your home you should also make sure all windows and doors are closed, and turn light off when not needed.
