Former NBA star and current NBA analyst Charles Barkley was recently asked about reports that sports brand Nike had funded a study on transgender children in sports—specifically examining the effects of hormone therapy and related treatments on trans adolescents. Barkley firmly stated that “men should not play sports against women,” and made it clear he sees the topic as non-negotiable.

Speaking on the Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich podcast, Barkley said, “I’m not gonna get into all the bulls–t that’s going on out here in the world today. Men should not play sports against women. If anybody thinks that, I think they’re stupid.”
He continued, “I support the gay community 100 percent. I support the transgender community 100 percent. But I do not, under any circumstances… think that men should play sports against women. If anybody has a problem with that, they’re gonna have to get over it because I’m not gonna change my [mind]. I just think it’s wrong, period. I don’t even think that’s controversial… I don’t wanna hear you try to explain it to me. No, no, no, I don’t wanna hear it. I’m not gonna argue with you. Men shouldn’t play sports against women. I’m done.”
Barkley also addressed the topic of medical treatments for transgender adolescents. “I don’t even think anybody knows who they are as a young kid. So I think we have to be very careful because you don’t want to put kids in a disadvantageous situation. When you get older, you can make your own decision. I think we have to be very careful screwing around with kids because they’re not fully developed as a person,” he said.

He added that, just like parents don’t give in to every demand from children, they also shouldn’t let them follow what he referred to as trends. Former President Donald Trump recently signed an order banning biological males from competing in women’s sports. This directive requires schools to comply or risk losing federal funding. In response, the NCAA has also updated its gender eligibility policies.
