NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday accused West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee of diverting attention from real issues by protesting against the special intensive revision of electoral rolls by the Election Commission.
Leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the TMC’s accusations over SIR were false and politically motivated.
“They are engaging in hooliganism. This is a completely false accusation… Corruption, women’s safety, unemployment, appeasement politics, and attacks on Hindu deities are major issues in this state," Adhikari said.
"They are deliberately doing all this to divert attention from the real issue. All this is a conspiracy of Mamata Banerjee and her nephew,” he added.
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh also upped the ante against Mamata and claimed Bangladesh infiltrators are leaving India as SIR has gained momentum. He also alleged that TMC is staging a drama to protect them.
"We have been seeing for two months since SIR gained momentum, many Bangladeshi infiltrators are running away. They thought they would be jailed. Everyone is running away. The TMC is staging drama to protect them... I think SIR will be completed peacefully. Some TMC goons and criminals are trying to stop it, but that is not possible..." Ghosh told ANI.
Earlier, Adhikari had said the Election Commission’s move was similar to “pouring carbolic acid into snake pits to expose infiltrators,” asserting that the SIR would help identify and deport “Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators and Rohingyas” living in the state with TMC’s support.
He added that Indian citizens from minority communities had nothing to fear.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee is set to lead a protest rally in Kolkata on Tuesday against the SIR, joined by Abhishek Banerjee.
The TMC has alleged that the revision drive has instilled fear among citizens, linking recent deaths in Bengal to panic caused by the exercise.
Earlier, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that it will conduct the second phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 States and Union Territories, with the final voter list to be published on February 7, 2026.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar stated that the exercise will cover the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
