CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin condemned on Thursday President Droupadi Murmu’s questioning of SC decision fixing deadlines for President and governors to give their assent to bills.
On X, Stalin said, “I strongly condemn Union govt’s presidential reference, which attempts to subvert the constitutional position already settled by the Hon’ble SC in Tamil Nadu governor’s case and other precedents. This attempt clearly exposes the fact that Tamil Nadu governor acted at BJP’s behest to undermine the people’s mandate.”
CM added, “This is nothing but a desperate attempt to weaken democratically elected state govts by placing them under the control of governors serving as agents of Union govt. It directly challenges the majesty of law and the authority of SC as the final interpreter of the Constitution.”
Murmu’s reference, made under Article 143 (1) of the Constitution, includes 14 questions for SC. These questions seek court’s opinion on assent to bills passed by state legislatures.
Stalin posed a series of questions on Union govt’s intentions. “Why should there be any objection to prescribing time limits for governors to act? Is BJP seeking to legitimise its governors’ obstruction by allowing delays in bill assent? Does Union govt intend to paralyse non-BJP state legislatures,” he asked.
